DIY | Explaining The Seasons Changing to Kids.

It’s time to say goodbye to summer and welcome to autumn! But why do we have four seasons in a year and who decided that would happen?

Why do seasons exist?

We all know that there are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter! But why do they exist? The answer is simpler than you might think! It is because of the Earth’s tilt and the turns it makes around the sun. This is called the translation movement.

The seasons, then, depend on the Earth's inclination relative to the sun. Thus, when the north pole is facing the sun, the Earth is warmer in the northern hemisphere and cooler in the southern hemisphere and consequently the opposite happens when the south pole is facing the sun. Therefore, the seasons of the year are the opposite in the northern and southern hemispheres.

The dates of the seasons of the year in the UK & Ireland are:

Autumn: September 22nd - December 21st

Winter: December 21st - March 21st

Spring: March 22nd - June 21st

Summer: June 21st - September 22nd

To celebrate the arrival of Autumn, we have made two easy DIYs with the help of nature! We are sure the children will love them and have fun creating them with their families and babysitters!

First DIY: Emotions

Instructions:

1. Go outside with the children and look for leaves that have fallen in your neighborhood!

2. Draw emotions on a piece of paper (happy, sad, angry, etc.).

3. Cut out the emotions (with adult supervision).

4. Glue the emotions onto the leaves.

5. Glue wooden sticks onto the back of the leaves.

6. Start playing and explaining emotions to children!

Second DIY: Autumn Bride

Instructions:

1. Find a leaf in the shape you want your dress to have and glue it to a piece of paper.

2. Using a pencil, sketch a girl behind the leaf.

3. Glue some flowers in her hand to give her a bouquet.

4. Give her some finishing touches - put some detail in her hair.

5. Give your drawing the finishing touches by tracing over with a black pen.

6. She’s ready to get married!
