Get startedLooking for some kid-friendly St. Patrick’s Day activities? A great option is to spend some quality time with your family at home making some St. Patrick’s themed arts and crafts! This pretty and easy-to-make toilet paper roll yarn shamrock is a fun DIY for both kids and adults alike.
What is the story of the shamrock?
The name shamrock comes from the Irish word “seamróg”, which is the diminutive of “seamair óg”, and simply means "young clover". Legend has it that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity with each leaf representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is why the shamrock is now used as a symbol of Ireland. And on that note...
Happy St. Paddy’s from Babysits! Now let’s get crafting.

What you’ll need:

- Toilet paper roll
- Green yarn (ours is cotton)
- Craft glue
- Scissors
Step by step:

Step 1 - Cut four 1cm circular strips out of your toilet paper roll.
Step 2 - To create the shamrock’s leaves, bend three of your strips into heart shapes. To do this, take one of your strips and press it together to flatten it. You will now have two pointed ends. Press the top point down to create the two “bumps” at the top of the heart. The bottom point will then be the bottom point of your heart.
Step 3 - To create the stem, take your fourth circular strip and cut it at one of the ends so you now have a regular long strip. You can then cut this shorter to your preferred stem length (we cut ours in half).
Step 4 - Next, take one of your cardboard pieces and apply glue to both sides. Then take a length of yarn, press it against the cardboard and start wrapping it around. It’s better to do this in sections, so that the glue doesn’t dry out before you can wrap the yarn around it. Do this for each piece, cutting off any excess thread.
Step 5 - Now glue the leaves and stem together to create the shamrock.
And there you have it, your very own toilet paper roll yarn shamrock! However, if one isn’t enough feel free to make multiple and tie them together with extra thread to create a St. Paddy’s Day garland or mobile for your (babysitting) kids.

We hope you enjoyed this festive craft! If you or your (babysitting) kids are looking for more fun and easy art projects, then try making some of our other DIYs, like these Paper Mache Yarn Easter Eggs.
